Theories of Child Development and Learning

Why has this view been replaced by the attitude of educators and parents to “get children ready” for school? What is the rush?
The reason why a lot of parents or educators are forced to rush children is because one in order for children to succeed its needed that they be pushed to be able to withstand the other needs of their peers. Also in today’s Society the government has created deadlines for children by putting them through standardized test to see if they have reached certain areas in subjects in order to move on. As well as making the educators they to remain focused on the test then what the needs of the children are. Also when you look at it teachers and parents also push children to rush their learning then allowing children to learn on their own. Allowing children to grow at their own pace because they are their own person and not everyone is the same.
I guess what a lot of people don’t understand is that the learning that we teach our students or children cant be consisted through marks and scores that are given to range us if we are good or bad at learning. Being a preschool teacher we have standards that the children need to reach by a certain age but the thing is that it’s just a standard you cant always expect the children to be able to do everything. If at three a child needs to be able to refine their fine motor skills but cant till the age four it doesn’t mean the child is a failure but the child is still learning which is why in classrooms we provide children activities to refine those skills.

Describe the differences between Piagetian and Vygotskian theories. Which do you favor and why?

So according to the article by Suzy Edwards between the social theories of Piagetian and Vygotskian. According to Vygotskin there are three different paths for his social cultural theory. Those paths are transformative assimilated positivist and social-constructive paths. Within having these three paths it separates what Piagetian theory. In the theory of the three paths it is broken down according to serve the purpose to displace the individual person towards their own knowledge and development. Towards Piageatians influenced theory of developmental practices it is standards or a guideline to follow that is where the childs age needs to be able to do a certain skill or at least acquire the skill by the age.

  1. Hi Jasmine,
Yes, students are expected to meet certain milestones. And if they do not succeed that is when we should be providing more experiences in that area, so that they may achieve.

  2. Hi Jasmine,

You bring up children needing the space to learn and that we should provide the opportunities for them to succeed at their own pace. What would you tell the parents of children in your class that ask you to rush their children to get ready? How would you describe the purpose of your curriculum? If we think that the current rush towards readiness is not appropriate, what can we do as individuals and as a field to change that?

Which theory are you more drawn to, Piaget's or Vygotsky's? How does a child's culture and context fit into your work with young children? How does their culture and context affect the ways you teach?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts this week!
